Dala Nasser: Cemetery of Martyrs

KM21 proudly presents the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands by Dala Nasser (b. 1990, Lebanon). Her large-scale installation Cemetery of Martyrs transforms the museum space into a symbolic graveyard.

Although Nasser also integrates sound and sculpture into her work, her approach is like that of a painter: abstraction, fabric, pigments, and stretcher bars play a significant role. The installation includes a collection of charcoal prints depicting the graves of influential cultural figures (artists, writers, poets, filmmakers, historians, and journalists) from Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, and the United Kingdom, spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the present. They fought for independence and freedom in times of political dominance and occupation. An accompanying audio work will permeate through the installation, featuring a voice communicating between both realms of the living and the dead. Cemetery of Martyrs invites visitors into a collective space of mourning and remembrance, resistance and renewal.

Cemetery of Martyrs is produced and commissioned by Nottingham Contemporary in collaboration with KM21 and Peer Gallery, London, UK
