Pulling Scales

Pulling Scales

Is it a lizard? A caiman? Or maybe just a dog? Or just a man…

All we know is that it’s green, sensual, mad and hungry for change.

People in Cuba have been stuck in a harsh, endless cycle for a long time. They are crushed like bugs under the pressure of twisted communist ideas and wild, extreme right-wing beliefs.

Pulling Scales is based on the idea of change and transformation. It reflects on the process of awakening, both individual and collective. It’s a dance performance by Henry Rodríguez in collaboration with Elle. a.k.a. Lea Katrin (costume design) and L’DELTA a.k.a. Henry Rodríguez (music production) and is part of a series of works titled Physical Rootlessness.

Winner of FAB AWARD 2025.

Back for two nights at Fringe 2026.

About the makers

Ballet Goyeska is an Amsterdam-based dance company founded in 2022 by choreographer Henry Rodríguez. It reimagines ballet as a living, evolving art form by combining the precision of ballet and Escuela Bolera with Afro-diasporic embodiment, ritual, and surreal imagery. Through an innovative choreographic vision, Ballet Goyeska transforms Spanish cultural memory and Afro-diasporic knowledge into contemporary performances that explore beauty, brutality, identity, and imagination, creating powerful, dreamlike works that resonate with today’s diverse audiences.

Henry Rodríguez is a dancer, choreographer, dance educator and music maker born in Cuba and who is currently based in the Netherlands. His expertise was forged in places such as the National School of Dance in Cuba, Ballet Español de Cuba, Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Dutch National Ballet Academy, Pyntago Electronic Music Academy, among others. Rodríguez’s work was presented and awarded at festivals such as Florence Dance Festival, AmsterDans International Competition, Burgos & New York International Choreographic Contest, Bevrijdingsfestival, Electropark Festival, and the Amsterdam Fringe Festival, where he won the Fringe At Best Award with the piece Pulling Scales. Alongside his artistic work, he teaches workshops and classes that share his creative process and movement research with a wide range of audiences.
