Bert Frings & Niek Hendrix

For the duo exhibition of Niek Hendrix (1985, lives and works in Rotterdam) and Bert Frings (1972, lives and works in Rotterdam), NL=US Art presents two painting practices that approach the historical still life not as a closed tradition, but as an active system of images that is continuously reread and reconstructed. Both artists work from motifs and visual structures that are deeply connected to the history of European painting—such as flower pieces, tabletop still lifes, and studio fragments. However, they do not use these elements to reconstruct the past. Instead, they function as carriers of shifting meanings, through which reproduction, materiality, and contemporary visual culture remain visibly at work. Within the exhibition, a tension emerges between familiarity and disruption. Painterly details, surfaces, and compositions refer to historical precedents, while at the same time it remains clear that the image is a construction: assembled, translated, and repositioned in the present. As a result, the still life appears not as a genre of stasis, but as a form in which time accumulates and is reorganized. Where Frings develops a concentrated attention to atmosphere and pictorial stillness, Hendrix focuses more explicitly on the ways images function as cultural and historical objects. Together, the works reveal a shared interest in painting as a medium in which history is not represented, but actively produced.
