Marilyn Nance: Spirit Faith Grace Rage
Marilyn Nance: Spirit Faith Grace Rage
Five decades of work by photographer Marilyn Nance, beginning with her documentation of New York City daily life starting at age eighteen. A significant body includes her photographic record from FESTAC '77 (Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture) in Lagos, Nigeria. The title represents Nance's conceptual framework: "Spirit is the underlying energy of an event; Faith lies in the belief that everything works towards the greater good; Grace acknowledges the spiral of time and the beauty, love and joy that lives in the everyday; Rage is that built up energy that finds expression." The exhibition features reunions, communions, dance trains, stages, street and church scenes, demonstrations and living rooms, alongside sonic elements curated by artist Ali Santana.
