Opening: Omen | Gabriel Lester

An omen is a sign of things to come. But perhaps it has already begun.

At Capital C, Lester brings together works that are connected in various ways. Some already exist, but are brought to life anew in a different context. Others are variations on previously exhibited work, or ideas that had been lying dormant in the imagination. But the focus lies on a series of new experiments, in which time stands still and takes on a form, as in a vision. The exhibition is an extension of the artist’s studio. Paper, wood, spray cans, paint, prints, light and photography. Around the works, the Capital C building carries on as usual. People come and go. Frozen moments hang within that flow.

Gabriel Lester (Amsterdam, 1972) is an artist, filmmaker and inventor. He works with installation, film, sound, sculpture, architecture and public space. In his work, time is not a backdrop but a material. His work has been exhibited at, amongst others, documenta 13, the Venice, São Paulo, Sydney, Istanbul, Busan and Liverpool Biennales, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. Through his studio PolyLester, he has realised more than fifty projects in public spaces worldwide, and under the name LestarFilm he makes films, including the feature film A Ringing in the Ears (2025). Lester is a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts and chair of Fonds Kwadraat. He lives and works in Zaandam.
