Artist in Motion: An Hommage

Bildhalle Amsterdam presents RENÉ GROEBLI, ARTIST IN MOTION: AN HOMMAGE a special exhibition honouring the life and work of one of Switzerland’s most important photographers, René Groebli (1927–2026). The exhibition is a tribute to an artist with whom the gallery shared a long-standing friendship and whose photographic legacy it continues to preserve.

Bringing together carefully selected works from different periods of Groebli’s remarkable career, the exhibition highlights the extraordinary diversity of his artistic vision. From his early experimental photography and iconic series to his pioneering colour experiments and later works, the presentation reflects his constant curiosity and innovative approach to the photographic medium.

Groebli understood photography not simply as a means of documenting reality, but as a way of expressing emotion, memory, movement and personal perception. His groundbreaking series Rail Magic (1949), with its dynamic and blurred images of a moving train, transformed the experience of speed and time into visual poetry. In The Eye of Love (1954), an intimate series dedicated to his wife Rita, he translated personal experience into a deeply poetic and universal visual language.

Throughout his career, Groebli explored the possibilities of photography across reportage, industrial photography, advertising, colour and experimental imagery. ARTIST IN MOTION invites visitors to rediscover an exceptional photographer whose work continues to connect innovation, emotion, and visual poetry.

René Groebli (1927–2026) was one of the most influential Swiss photographers of the 20th century. Born in Zurich, he developed an early fascination with photography and film, which shaped his experimental approach throughout his career.

After completing his photographic training, Groebli quickly established himself as an innovative image maker, exploring the relationship between photography, movement and time. His groundbreaking series “Rail Magic” (1949) became internationally recognised for its dynamic, blurred images of a moving train, capturing the sensation of speed and atmosphere rather than a purely documentary reality.

In 1954, Groebli created “The Eye of Love”, an intimate and poetic series dedicated to his wife Rita. The work remains one of his most celebrated photographic achievements and reflects his ability to transform personal experience into universal visual language.

Throughout his long career, Groebli continuously experimented with new techniques and approaches, including pioneering work in colour photography. His oeuvre encompasses reportage, industrial photography, advertising, experimental imagery and deeply personal artistic projects.
