During a two-month residency as Summer Guest in Nieuw Charlois, Istanbul-based photographer Silva Bingaz developed a new body of work created in Rotterdam with people from the neighborhood.

Her series Vartuhi – Invisible Side of Rose Lady unfolds as a fictional narrative shaped by absence: the absence of witnessing her daughter Vartuhi’s visits to the Netherlands with her father. Nearly a decade after separating from her Dutch husband, with whom she had lived for many years in Istanbul, Bingaz returned to the Netherlands not as a partner or mother, but as an artist. What began as an attempt to poetically retrace the paths her daughter once walked transformed into an immersion in a broader, global sense of alienation and solitude.

For this occasion, Prins de Vos (Amsterdam), winner of the World Press Photo, Europe Singles 2025, was invited to engage in conversation with Bingaz. De Vos’s practice underscores the essential role of relationships in communities where support and care are often fragile. By weaving personal narratives into larger themes of solidarity, care, and identity, their work emphasizes that the right to exist is never an isolated condition, but deeply embedded in connection with others.

Together, Bingaz and De Vos embody two generations of photographers for whom the medium remains a mirror to the daily search for identity, belonging, and the affirmation of existence.
