With the exhibition 2%, Capital C Gallery presents the work of painter and draftsman Mattijs Werner. For years, his oeuvre was defined by multi-layered complexity: bringing together multiple images and perspectives into a single painting.
In 2023, his practice underwent a profound transformation. Werner was affected by Leber's disease, a genetic eye condition that caused him to lose 98% of his vision in a short span of time. What remained: faint contours at the periphery of his visual field, the rest shrouded in white mist.
Yet this did not mark the end of his artistry. Thanks to an electronic screen magnifier, Werner discovered a new way of working. With 100% visual memory and 2% vision, he draws the city once again—line by line. The houses and streets, once concealed within the layers of his paintings, return onto paper. His work is an endeavor to remap the world: everything he still remembers, and everything he has lost.
The exhibition 2% showcases the resilience of an artist who has transformed his visual impairment into a new, intimate visual language.
Opening: Wednesday, September 18, 17:30 at Capital C Gallery, Amsterdam.
