inner world in shared space

Here, halfway is spelled in the Old Zandvoort dialect: hall"uv"urw^eeg"u. A word from the 18th and 19th centuries, when Zandvoort fishwives walked the roughly 10-kilometre fishermen's path from the coast to De Vishal in Haarlem. Somewhere between the beach and the market, halfway, at the foot of the dunes, they put on their wooden shoes and continued their journey towards the inhabited world.

De Vishal is such an in-between space: halfway, simultaneously interior and exterior, sheltered yet permeable. This is tangible in the dual nature of the building, with its covered arcades on either side and an open central section whose paving seamlessly connects with that of the Grote Markt. Visitors move through a space that is never fully private and never fully public. It is precisely within this field of tension that the artists operate. A remarkable site where public space invites attention to our inner world. The exhibition explores the need for an in-between space in which we can retreat without entirely shutting ourselves off.

The four artists each give shape to inner experience within public space in their own distinct way. Their work aligns with the character of De Vishal, the fishermen's path, and the immediate surroundings of the building, manifesting across various media, from sound work to performance.
