Day for Night | Minne Kersten

Annet Gelink Gallery is proud to present Minne Kersten's second solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition will open during the official opening weekend of the new art season, on Friday 5 September between 17:00 and 20:00.

Minne Kersten is an artist based in Paris and Amsterdam who works across video, installation, and painting. Underpinning these media is a literary approach through which she combines her means to create a constructed world, in which objects and scenes bear traces of both fact and fiction. She speculates on how we can evoke events, memories, and narratives by tracing what has been lost in what remains behind. Her work explores the relationship between the real and the imagined, the mundane and the fleeting, raising questions around memory and reconstruction. By drawing attention to the process of construction in both our shared reality and our imagination, her work bridges intimate themes such as grief, loss, and longing with the collective realm of fiction, fables, and symbolism.

In recent years, she has frequently employed the method of creating an architectural environment that reveals itself as scenography, film set, and ultimately sculpture. Often inspired by personal encounters with spaces, these sculptures offer a concrete ground to explore how a space can witness or distort narratives and events. By staging situations featuring symbolic elements, such as the appearance of animals or ghostly presences, she alludes to ways in which the past can leave imprints on the present. By subjecting her scenes to chaos, decay, and disruption, she suggests different outcomes of the shared experience of instability, loss of control, and reaching a state of transition.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at CAPC Musée Bordeaux 2024, Glasgow International 2024, Bonnefantenmuseum 2023, 16e Biënnale van Lyon 2022, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam 2022, Living Art Museum 2022, Hotel Maria Kapel 2021, HISK Brussel 2021, Haus Wien 2021, De Ateliers 2020, and others. In 2022, she won the Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Publieksprijs and was nominated for the Koninklijke Prijs voor de Vrije Schilderkunst. She has participated in residencies at De Ateliers, Triangle Astérides, and Cité Internationale des Arts, and is represented by Annet Gelink Gallery in Amsterdam.
