Michiel ten Bokum presents a whole series of new works created over the past year. Older works are recycled by incorporating them into new ones. His signature style combines figuration with abstraction and a distinct use of color. The subjects portrayed stem from his penchant for outsiders and underdogs. He often chooses second-rate dictators, liars, famous deceased alcoholics, or athletes who just missed out on a prize, as well as writers, musicians, and film stars. Even a shady gallery owner might feature, alongside people from his immediate surroundings. Whether the viewer recognizes these individuals plays an increasingly minor role; the composition as a whole and the use of color all the more so.
With Ten Bokum, questions are continuously raised about what identity is, which social position is interesting, and where the boundaries lie for addressing these topics. Ten Bokum’s works engage us with humor and absurdity, yet always rooted in his formidable painterly qualities.
