KANIS
KANIS
In KANIS, artists Simon Schrikker and Emo Verkerk come together in an exhibition where the dog is omnipresent, yet rarely the true subject. The title refers not only to Canis, the Latin word for dog, but also echoes the everyday Dutch expressions 'hou je kanis' (shut your trap) and 'een klap voor je kanis' (a punch in the face). A basic algorithm.
Here, the dog appears as a symbol of human relations. At times it keeps watch, at times it looks back, at times it seems to enter the frame purely by chance. In Verkerk's work, the dog is an extra heightening the scene's drama. In Schrikker's, it plays the tragic lead (or tragicomic, depending on how you look at it).
Schrikker and Verkerk's visual languages are entirely distinct, yet intuition plays a major role for both. Their work navigates between gravity and irony, intimacy and alienation. Schrikker presents sculptures and Verkerk paintings.
Gummbah will put everything into perspective with 1 drawing, and then everything will turn out fine anyway.
Should you have a well-behaved dog, he/she/they are also warmly welcome.
