om / de ene na / de andere / om
om / de ene na / de andere / om
7 artists on repetition and mystery
‘om / de ene na/ de andere / om’ is a celebration of inspired repetition. The repetitive manifesting in mantras, rituals, or drawing on predecessors, among others. Inspired repetition is not mechanical repetition—factory-made, uniform without soul—but rhythmic, varying, and soulful. Repetition that does not close off but opens up, repetition with mystery at its core.
The works in this exhibition each respond in their own way to the idea of repetition and mystery. By quoting predecessors, reiterating a name, repeating historical cultural elements, generating a series, highlighting the absurd, or endlessly repeating a form. Repetition can be found within a single work, or across a series or oeuvre, but above all, it opens up a space that seems rich and inexhaustible.
The title ‘om / de ene na / de andere / om’ refers to the repeating phrase in the stripped-back, mantra-like poem "4. De zon in de pan van" by F. Van Dixhoorn.
