Galerie SANAA / The labyrinth that you are – Raafat Ballan & Sophie Steengracht

EXTENDED! Through Saturday, 21 February

In the exhibition ‘The labyrinth that you are’, Raafat Ballan and Sophie Steengracht present new work inspired by a shared love for the magical-realist poetry of the painter and writer Etel Adnan (Beirut 1925–Paris 2021).

Sophie Steengracht’s work stems from a fascination with the interconnectedness between human beings, plants, and the cycles of life. Raafat Ballan paints figures and images that transcend the present moment, history, and our expectations of where things are heading.

Since 2019, Ballan and Steengracht have shared their lives—and with that, their art, their minds, and their vision. The exhibition ‘The labyrinth that you are’, titled after a quote by Etel Adnan, marks their first joint exhibition. Alongside new individual works by Raafat Ballan and Sophie Steengracht, the presentation includes collaborative pieces created together.

Catrien Schreuder (Curator of Modern Art at Centraal Museum) curates the exhibition and will also deliver the opening address on 17 January at 16:00.
