Homesick for Another World: a film unfolding in space

Traversing different societies, time periods, and political struggles, Homesick for Another World unfolds as a hybrid experience mixing live-film, lecture-performance, and theater. From Mei Liu’s 3-year artistic research, the work dives in the world of luciddreaming under oppressive systems exemplified by physical confinements, juxtaposing the access to cosmic, spiritual freedom with the dark socio, bio-political reality.

Documentary footage, oral histories, dreams, speculative fiction, and personal reflection are interweaved to collapse time-space. With both humor and insight, the work asks how collective consciousness and memory might offer alternative imaginaries forsolidarity and resistance.

About the makers

Mei Liu is an artist, performance-maker and filmmaker originally from Shanghai, now based in Amsterdam. Her practice explores speculative fiction rooted in social reality, embodied memory and collective resistance.

She is a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academie, and a recipient of Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst 3Package Deal. She received her MA in Artistic Research in and through Cinema at Netherlands Film Academy and BFA in Film Production from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She participated in the Venice Biennale College Blend, Apichatpong Weerasethakul film lab in the Amazon jungle, and Forecast Mentorship to work with artist mentor Lieko Shiga.

Her performances have been shown at Theater Commons Tokyo, Eye Filmmuseum, Radialsystem, Tokyo Arts and Space; her films screened at Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival, WORM Pirate Bay, among others.

Mei is interested in alternative structures, dreams, and the mystical realms of existence. She strives to create new commons such as filmmaking spaces that disrupt existing hierarchies and interactions in society. She co-founded Cenote Workshop, a Shanghai-based collaborative community project anchored in spiritual activism that hosts improvisational performance workshops in attempt to reawaken our relationship with the immaterial world around us; she also co-founded Electric Shadows, an Amsterdam-based artist-run space with members from the global south.
