Stille Bevreemding

Moving Gallery presents the duo exhibition Stille Bevreemding. In this exhibition, paintings and sculptures converge in a fascinating world. Featuring painter Anutosh and sculptor Mariëtte van der Ven, the gallery brings together two artists who each, in their own way, engage with alienation and recognition.

Anutosh on a grand scale in Utrecht for the first time

Utrecht-based artist Anutosh is exhibiting extensively in his home city for the first time. Internationally, he boasts an impressive track record, yet remarkably, his work has never before been shown here on this scale.

His paintings emerge from an intuitive process in which memory, observation, and imagination intertwine. Figures and situations appear recognisable, yet resist simple categorization. During an extended residency in Berlin, he developed a new series that is now being presented at Moving Gallery. These works reveal a palpable tension between proximity and distance, between what one perceives and what eludes capture.

“What captivates me about Anutosh’s work is that you are immediately drawn into it,” says gallery director Arnoud van Mosselveld. “It is enigmatic. Yet entirely accessible. You simply keep looking.”

Mariëtte van der Ven: idiosyncratic sculptures

For years, Mariëtte van der Ven has also been regarded as a leading figure among sculptors and ceramic artists. Her sculptures provide a natural counterpoint and complement to Anutosh’s paintings. Her ceramic sculptures possess an immediate, physical presence while carrying an unsettling quality. They are breathtaking and evoke a profound sense of stillness.

Van der Ven’s work operates at the intersection of sculpture and object, where material, texture, and imperfection play a vital role. Each piece possesses its own distinct character—at times playful, often contemplative.

An encounter between two worlds

In Beelden van Bevreemding, the paintings and ceramic works complement one another to cultivate a singular atmosphere. Where Anutosh evokes a mystical world on canvas, Van der Ven’s objects extend that world into physical space.

“The beauty of this pairing is that while the work of both artists is distinct, it evokes comparable sentiments,” states Van Mosselveld. “They belong together. You recognise something, yet it remains just beyond reach.”
