New Paintings | Alan Charlton

During the Festive Gallery Night on Thursday, 22 May, as part of Amsterdam Art Week 2025, Slewe Gallery opens an exhibition featuring new work by British artist Alan Charlton.

In the exhibition, Charlton (b. 1948, Sheffield) presents two new series of works. One series has a square format, while the other features round works composed of two or more panels. The circle is a new element in Charlton’s oeuvre; this marks the first time they are being shown. The exhibition runs from 22 May through 21 June. It marks Charlton's fourth solo exhibition at Slewe Gallery.

Alan Charlton is one of Britain’s most renowned figures in Minimal and Conceptual Art. For over 50 years, his practice has consisted purely of monochrome grey paintings made with acrylic on canvas. At the age of twenty-one, while studying at the Camberwell School of Art, he decided to focus exclusively on creating grey paintings. For Charlton, grey is the most emotional and varied of colors. All of his works are based on a 4.5 cm module. The balanced compositions, often comprising multiple grey panels, lend the paintings a monumental and distinct presence.

Since the 1970s, Charlton has had numerous major international museum and gallery exhibitions. In the Netherlands, he has had solo shows at art & project, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. In Germany, he exhibited at Konrad Fischer Galerie en Museum Kurhaus Kleve, in Italy at Castello di Rivoli, Torino, in Switzerland at Galerie Tschudi, in Paris at Musée d’Art Moderne, and in London at Annely Juda Gallery and Tate. His work is held in prestigious public and private collections worldwide.
