With one spontaneous question — "May I take your portrait?" — Michelle stepped into the shops and businesses of Javastraat, capturing their stories in image and sound. Via QR codes alongside the photographs, visitors can watch their portrait videos and get to know the neighbourhood's residents and local figures. Ode aan Oost is an affectionate tribute to Oost — to its entrepreneurs, inhabitants, and streets. I am a self-taught photographer and filmmaker, drawn to the medium because I love sharing my view of the world through photography and video. We live in an era where differences are increasingly amplified, sparking friction and negativity. Through my work, I want to highlight the exact opposite: what we share, and how our diversity makes us truly beautiful. I do this by observing everyday life and seeking connection across various neighbourhoods with the people who inhabit them. The photographs and videos that emerge resonate with people.
