Inner Chamber
Inner Chamber
Tomas Hillebrand uses glass as a medium to construct an inner space that is not immediately visible, yet remains constantly present. A graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, his work is rooted in European traditions while reflecting a sensibility close to Eastern ways of perceiving—a continuous attentiveness to nature, fragility, and balance.
Formed under the influence of heat and pressure, each object encloses a subtle “Inner Chamber”—a space generated by the interplay between the presence and absence of material. Here, transparency is not merely about revealing, but about refraction and reflection. Light penetrates, bends, and lingers between surface and depth.
Working in a centuries-old Dutch glass studio, the artist builds upon traditional glassblowing techniques, transforming artisanal craftsmanship into a contemporary visual language. This process is steeped in uncertainty and marked by a very low success rate. The works that ultimately endure become condensations of time, energy, and material transformation.
