Opening In the Fold | Working Title

We are pleased to invite you to the opening of the inaugural exhibition In the Fold at Working Title, a new contemporary art gallery at Van Ostadestraat 43A in Amsterdam. The exhibition opens on Thursday 2 October from 18:00 to 21:00. You are warmly invited to join us for the festive opening and raise a glass with us.

To mark this new beginning, artist Dion Rosina has co-curated the exhibition. He presents his work alongside that of Nathan Joshua Bastien, Wendy Owusu, and Matt Saunders. Although their practices diverge in style and even span different periods, the works are united by themes of sampling and fragmentation, both visually—through collage and assemblage—and conceptually, in their reflections on fragmented identities and histories.

Dion Rosina (1991) is a Dutch Afro-Caribbean painter. His work often begins with collages of disparate images, which he manipulates and reassembles in his paintings. This working method is heavily influenced by sampling found in hip-hop music. Rosina explores how diverse themes, ideas, and imagery can influence one another through assemblage, mirroring life itself, where everything is interconnected and continually shaped through interaction. Rosina began his practice in 2020. Since then, his work has been exhibited at Museum MORE, Museum Rembrandthuis, Drents Museum, and Museum Catharijneconvent, among others, as well as during Documenta Fifteen in Kassel. His work is currently on view at Buro Stedelijk in de tentoonstelling #52 TO BE DETERMINED, which explores artistic interventions in semi-public space (on view through 23 October).

In her practice, Wendy Owusu (1994) focuses on identity, conducting anthropological research into her cultural heritage. She also investigates the preservation of traditions and their contemporary interpretations. She shares her findings with the public through editions, videos, and installations, interweaving documentary footage with photography. In addition, she examines themes surrounding group and urban transitions, employing textiles and clothing as narrative devices. Owusu graduated cum laude from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2021 and is currently in residence at Artagon Pantin (Paris). Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2022–2023), Vancouver Art Gallery (2023), and CODA Museum (2023). She has collaborated with institutions such as Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, and Fondation Cartier.

The working method of Nathan Joshua Bastien (1989) shares affinities with that of Rosina. Bringing diverse images together, he employs painting to generate new meanings that are largely shaped by the viewer's interpretation. He draws inspiration from multicultural identity, street and counterculture, as well as the design and representation of childhood worlds and educational programming, with socio-cultural integration as an overarching motif. Bastien received his Master’s degree in painting from LUCA School of Arts in Ghent in 2023.

The work Hertha Thiele #1 by Matt Saunders (1975) bridges painting, photography, and printmaking with the moving image, explicitly referencing cinema and film history. The work depicts the German actress Hertha Thiele, best known for her early 1930s silent films, whose painted portrait has been cut out and repositioned onto a previously blank canvas. Saunders studied at Harvard, Cambridge, and Yale University, where he trained as a painter. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2020), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2016), and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2013). His work is held in the collections of major institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
