Summer @ SANAA 26 -highlights of the past year: 10 kunstenaars
! SANAA is closed from 15 July – 12 August.
Raafat Ballan, Balta, Sanne Bax, Anna Frydman, Nan Groot Antink, Su Melo, Suzanne Plomp, Har van der Put, Jessica Skowroneck & Anne Marie Spijker
The summer exhibition is a light-footed affair, featuring flowers, the color of the sun, transparent bodies, tufted trees, creepy insects, tactile sculptures, fictional equestrian statues, weathered portraits, tranquil little Mondrians, and a white flag – surrender.
Har van der Put paints Ghosts from the past – heroic equestrian statues, or do these figures re-emerge in our own time after all? Balta presents a white flag – a symbol of surrender – and poses a question: a flag always bears symbols – for a community, a country, or a corporation/product. This white flag… the void – only white – silence, and the impossibility of scrolling further. Jessica Skowroneck paints flowers as an antidote: "'to remain whole, we need moments of beauty and imagination.". In Anne Marie Spijker's paintings, the sun always seems to shine. During Su Melo's residency in Japan, she experienced reverence and a sense of interconnectedness with non-human entities – something that has profoundly shaped her artistic practice.
