The Unfixed Line

From 11 September to 26 September 2026, Ballon Rouge presents The Unfixed Line, a group exhibition bringing together the work of Vivian Ammerlaan, François Hendrickx, Anne Kære, Merel Klomp & Elmar Janse, Marlike Marks, Sanne Romeijn, and Dineke Versluis.

Water is never still. It shifts between forms, reflects its surroundings, carries traces of distant places, and constantly redraws the boundaries between land and sky. The Unfixed Line explores water as a force in motion, a space of connection, memory, and transformation.

Through photography and experimental processes, the artists in this exhibition approach water not only as a subject, but as a presence. Their works move between the visible and invisible, between vast landscapes and intimate experiences, revealing how water holds stories, emotions, and traces of time.

Vivian Ammerlaan's chemigrams exist between photography, painting and experimentation. By working directly with photographic chemicals on light-sensitive paper, she creates images shaped by material, chance and time. In Tijdloze leegten, organic forms evoke seas, misty horizons and unknown landscapes.

François Hendrickx approaches photography as a way of asking questions rather than providing answers, focusing on overlooked landscapes. In Krabbens Drøm, made with a pinhole camera, he explores imagined landscapes seen through the dreams of a crab living beneath the water's surface.

Anne Kære works with an intuitive, cinematic visual language. In Natures Symphonies she translates the rhythms and textures of nature into quiet compositions, inspired by the Japanese concept of yūgen, a beauty that is experienced rather than simply observed.

Merel Klomp and Elmar Janse document the transformation of ice into water across European landscapes in The Glacier Project, reflecting on fragile environments and the constant movement of nature.

Marlike Marks returns to familiar places through repeated routines and rituals, revealing a world that is continuously changing even when it appears still. Sanne Romeijn, in a new chapter of Those Moments in Between, photographs herself and her partner in the landscape of their new home, where water has become part of everyday life. Dineke Versluis reflects in Swell on the movement of waves and the invisible energy travelling through water, connecting distant places through the shared rhythm of the sea.

Together, the works explore water as something that cannot be fixed or fully contained. Like photography itself, it captures traces of a moment while remaining open to change.
