Today, language is increasingly shaped by computational systems. Translation software, predictive text, large language models, and neural networks are woven into language’s ongoing composition. The exhibition Universal Language: Concrete Composure approaches these technologies as expressions of a broader history, and part of a present ecology.
Through works that foreground modulation, listening, performance, participation, and collective learning, the participating artists reveal a digital present rooted as much in affect, memory, movement, and reciprocity as in coding or data.
Networks of Embodiment
The exhibition is part of Stroom’s long-term program Networks of Embodiment, which places the body and sensory experience at the center of its exploration of social issues such as climate, technology, and inequality. Within this framework, artists are invited to develop new ways of imagining and engaging with these themes.
