What remains | Bohyeon Hwang and Sanghyuk Kim

Enseoul is pleased to present What remains, a duo exhibition featuring new work by Bohyeon Hwang and Sanghyuk Kim. The exhibition will open on Friday 5 September, during Gallery Night for the opening of the new art season from 17:00 to 20:00.

This exhibition explores the beauty of incompleteness and asks whether wholeness, as we imagine it, exists at all.

Both artists depart from a shared premise: that essence reveals itself not in perfection, but precisely in rupture, absence, and transformation. By stripping away the ideals projected onto object and figure, Hwang and Kim investigate what remains when the notion of completeness falls apart.

Bohyeon Hwang’s paintings refuse any instrumental function, focusing instead on the moments when objects fracture, bloom, or wither. Her practice is rooted in metamorphosis and pneuma—the breath-like force that animates matter. On her canvases, incompleteness proves to be a fertile state: the uncurling petal, the withering flower, the lingering fragment.

Sanghyuk Kim directs this inquiry toward the human figure. His work dissects the body and its representations, revealing vulnerability and distortion as fundamental rather than defective. By dismantling the surface ideals of form, Kim locates essence not in harmony, but in rupture and fragility.

Together, the artists position incompleteness not as a lack, but as fertile ground. What remains suggests that only by dismantling the illusion of perfection can we arrive at a deeper, more plural understanding of existence.

What remains runs from 5 September to 2 October 2025 inclusive at Enseoul, with an opening on 5 September.
