Plucking The Broom

No Limits! Art Castle presents the group exhibition Plucking The Broom, which examines the history of witchcraft and the persecution of witches not merely as a thing of the past, but as something that continues to shape our society today. The witch hunts were not a medieval phenomenon born of superstition, but a systematic attack on anyone who fell outside the norm.

At the same time, the exhibition highlights what makes witchcraft and magic so beautiful and endlessly fascinating: how different people, especially those seen as ‘the Other’, draw strength from it, and how it brings people together.

For this exhibition, No Limits! Art Castle has invited artists Müge Yilmaz, Shani Leseman, Venus Jasper and Ginevra Petrozzi to create new work, inspired by their own experiences, practice and views on the theme of witches.

Also on display are works by Coco Sanne Hassink, Madalena Dimas, Noa Zuidervaart, Shanna Casey, Qiao Chu Guo, Kitty van Straaten, Jessica Magnin, Donne Dijkhorst, René van Breene, Rowan Moonlion, Anouk van Wijk, Krijn Kroes, Ania Bielska, Hannah van der Heide and Lewis Parrington-Stack.

Plucking The Broom means pulling the broom apart. Twig by twig, branch by branch, until the stereotype of the witch falls apart. What remains is not an old woman with a crooked nose and a pointed hat, but a many-voiced story about care, resistance, spirituality, ecology, technology and community. This exhibition invites you to look again at the figure of the witch. Not a character from a fairy tale, but people who fell outside the norm and who, despite everything, continued to care, share, make and dream.
