Networking and social exchange are important drivers of any art community. The Media Art Cafe is a part of V2_’s public program that provides our community of media art practitioners and enthusiasts with a space to gather and talk casually. Each edition is hosted by a member of staff or prominent invited guest(s), who will help to spark conversation or just serve you a drink while you catch up with friends or peers.
I M U v3.0 by Juul van der Laan
This edition of Media Art Café offers a limited-time trial session of I M U v3.0, the latest iteration of Juul van der Laan's immersive essay film installation.
In I M U, a deepfake algorithm manipulates the viewer's image live, creating a personal confrontation with the technology. The work is a meditative reflection on the self and the ways our self-image is shaped through technology. Featuring philosopher Mogobe Ramose, the installation draws on Ubuntu philosophy, often described as: "I am related, therefore I am."
Developed with the support of V2_, the City of Rotterdam, Amarte and the Netherlands Film Fund, earlier prototypes of I M U have been presented at Ars Electronica and Eye Filmmuseum.
