Melted for Love at Rozenstraat

How do we grieve or memorialise violence that is still going on? How do dispersed communities keep their ancestral knowledge while organising for justice? At Rozenstraat, the third chapter of the Sonic Acts Biennial exhibition answers through moving image and movement-based works that stay with losses that continue or resist closure.

Eglė Budvytytė gathers communities of death care, preparing to become part of the soil and air. Eliana Otta works with non-human species in the Peruvian Amazon to imagine the sounds that remain after Indigenous land defenders have been murdered. Christian Nyampeta and Kivu Ruhorahoza offer a poetic tribute to the un/dead, on bonds that outlast a single lifetime. Nikolay Karabinovych’s sound walk, heard on visitors’ own headphones and phones, reveals the Ukrainian city of Odesa as a ghost geography.

Works: As I’m going to bed, I think of Kinkerstraat (Nikolay Karabinovych); Asking Trees, Birds and Ghosts about Future Images and Sounds (Eliana Otta); Warmblooded and Earthbound (Eglė Budvytytė); Whispers (Kivu Ruhorahoza, Christian Nyampeta).
