Northern Realism is the movement to which many artists belong whose work Morren Galleries currently has in stock and can also supply upon request. This movement also forms the foundation of the Collectie Kleijn, part of which the gallery presents in-house. Many of these figurative artists were educated at the Academie Minerva in Groningen or taught there as well. The academy focused on realistic and figurative painting and boasted skilled craftsmen as teachers, including Henk Helmantel, Matthijs Röling, Barend Blankert, Wout Muller, Ger Siks, and Diederik Kraaijpoel. Counter-movement In the second half of the twentieth century, when the international art world was captivated by abstract expressionism, conceptual art, and minimalism, a remarkable counter-movement unfolded in the Netherlands. A group of painters from the north of the country chose not the radical innovation of abstraction, but a return to visible reality. Their approach was far removed from mere recording or photorealistically copying what the eye beholds. Northern Realism, as this movement came to be known, brought the everyday back into view with a technical virtuosity reminiscent of the Old Masters, yet with a contemporary sensitivity and thematic focus. What connects these painters is their love of detail, their search for stillness, and their ability to elevate ordinary objects or scenes into an almost spiritual experience. They offered, and continue to offer, a counterweight to the transience of modern visual culture.
