V2_ Live: Unstable brings together four performances that play with instability – of instruments, bodies, and environments. Each artist builds or reimagines their own tools to create the soundtrack of an uncertain world. The performances move across underwater acoustics, revived early electronic interfaces, and cyberpunk string instruments. Together they ask what it means to listen and create when the ground keeps shifting

Erik Peters & Lance Laoyan – Every Breath a Surge (2026)

Every Breath a Surge is a live audiovisual performance exploring underwater sound, voice, and listening practices in the context of changing ocean environments. Combining live vocalization, hydrophones, underwater cameras, field recordings, spatial audio, and real-time sound processing, the work investigates how sound travels through water and what forms of communication become possible beneath the surface. Every Breath a Surge unfolds as an aquatic opera that asks the audience to consider: How to mourn a drowning world?

Edwin van der Heide – Solospel (1991–1992 / 2026)

Solospel is a solo live electronic performance in which Edwin van der Heide explores sound as a dynamic, physical material. Using custom-developed digital signal processing and real-time interaction, the work focuses on the expressive possibilities of live electronic transformation, creating an evolving sonic environment in which composition and improvisation merge. The work uses a modified version of STEIM’s MIDI Conductor, an early gestural MIDI controller developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of STEIM’s research into alternative musical interfaces. It is a simpler interface derived from Michel Waisvisz’s Hands and produced as a multiple.

Edwin van der Heide & HIIIT – Overspel (1991–1992 / 2026)

Overspel is an improvised duet for percussion and live electronics. A percussionist plays cymbals while Van der Heide processes their sound in real time, with only the transformed sound amplified. The performance treats the two musicians as if they are jointly playing a single instrument, exploring cooperation, tension, and shared control through continuously evolving sonic interaction. The work later became the basis for Van der Heide’s experiments with networked performances over ISDN connections.

Mári Mákó – Cy (2026)

Mári Mákó presents her electroacoustic instrument: a sculptural metal-string creation inspired by the form and tradition of the harp, reimagined through a minimalist contemporary aesthetic. Combining the acoustic resonance of the strings with electronic wearable sensors, the instrument transforms physical gestures into sound in real time, drawing on Donna Haraway’s concept of cyborg feminism to investigate hybrid relationships between the body, technology, and musical expression.

For 45 years V2_ has been a space where artists, researchers and technologists come together to question, explore and experiment with emerging technologies. To mark this anniversary, V2_ presents Still Unstable: a programme of exhibitions, talks, interviews and live performances exploring the hidden systems that shape technological innovation today.

Rather than looking back, Still Unstable looks ahead. In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, algorithms and digital infrastructures, the programme asks what remains unseen: the labour, resources, ecologies and power structures behind contemporary technologies, and how artistic practice can make these visible.
